But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’

Luke 18:13 NLT

When we really recognize who we are before God, we will humble ourselves before Him.

We will recognize that we are not worthy to approach Him, because we will accept our filth and smallness before him.

We will feel sincere sorrow for having sinned, leading us to cry out for the compassion, grace and mercy of God upon our lives.
