The first love

“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.

Revelation 2:4-5 NLT

On more than one occasion I have heard many people, and even myself say “I want to return to my first love”, when referring to the incredible moments and emotions we experience when making the decision to follow Jesus. That joy that sprang from the innermost part of our being, that indescribable peace even in the midst of great adversity, the urgent need to know every day more and more of God, and almost insatiable desire to be in constant communion with Him

But one day feel like everything is ending or over, although it is not really something that happens in an instant, gradually cease to experience all these moments and emotions by allowing small licenses that gradually become so great sins and that make us go far away from enjoying intimate communion with God, a thing to drop impact is not immediate, first we travel some distance, most of the time, a distance of anguish.

But catch his first love is possible, but is not magic, nor automatic, for this God requires that we engage in at least two things:

  1. Refocus your life on what God has already done. Remember where we have fallen means recognizing that God has already transformed and may do so again. It is God who made us feel again the first love. First love is not a product of what I feel, is the product of what God does in our lives.
  2. Repent. This is not negotiable, no restoration without repentance, which is very different from remorse. Repent means a change in behavior, means to stop sinning.

So if you want to experience the first love in your life let God transform you and repent, and for this there is no alternative.
